AmeriCorps engages thousands of Americans each year in intensive service to meet critical needs in communities throughout the nation. Three different programs provide service opportunities for AmeriCorps members. AmeriCorps*State and National offers service opportunities of all kinds in thousands of programs throughout the United States. Members help address unmet community needs meet in education, public safety, health, and the environment. Members serve full- or part-time for 9-12 months or during the summer, up to 2 years. Their service might include restoring parks, tutoring youth, assisting crime victims, and building homes. AmeriCorps*VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is dedicated to eliminating poverty by helping individuals and low-income neighborhoods make positive changes for themselves. Through AmeriCorps*VISTA, ordinary people provide extraordinary service in more than 1,200 projects nationwide. AmeriCorps*VISTA members serve in hundreds of organizations throughout the country—working to fight illiteracy, improve health services, create businesses, increase housing opportunities, or bridge the digital divide. When VISTA members complete their service, they leave behind lasting solutions to some of our country's toughest problems. AmeriCorps*NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) is a full-time, team-based residential program for men and women aged 18–24. The NCCC is built on the belief that civic responsibility is an inherent duty of all citizens and that national service programs work effectively with local communities to address pressing needs. AmeriCorps*NCCC requires an intensive, ten-month commitment. Members are trained in CPR, first aid, and mass care before deploying for their first service project.
